What Users Are Saying
My father ordered this boat in 1962, powered with oars and a succession of outboards, the first a 3hp Johnson as he and his children fished lakes and reservoirs in South Dakota, in the late 1960s fishing TVA lakes with a McCullough outboard during C-130 transition training, and last with a 4hp Evinrude Yachtwin (the straight prop shaft, rather than the angled presumably "weedless" shaft that wasn't. Toward the end of his later career, raising cattle, at 81 we fished the Sportboat together on Montana's Flathead River. The upriver dam was shut down for maintenance, and the river quite shallow so I rowed most of the day after 'the only time we ever had to replace a shear pin on the outboard.' Dad caught two smallmouth bass, while I had a small frog hop beside me as we were changing that shear pin. Later in the afternoon, I ferried across the current into a deeper channel with a back current that carried us upriver, where the long-stored engine started and warmed up on our way to the bank where he parked the truck and trailer. After years of cartopping, we and the Sportboat deserve having the EZ-Loader bunk trailer. Six years later, Dad gifted me the boat and trailer, and I've replaced the worn oarlock bushings with new (delrin?) bushings ordered from Marathon Boat. The original compressed paper bushings served him well! I'm now taking care of this Sportboat (similar in design to the old Maine Guide Boat) to take my kids and grandkids fishing. A 2.5 hp Yamaha 4-stroke should arrive in another month, comparable to the original Johnson 3 hp 2-stroke outboard. Time marches on, and so do Grumman boats!
